Q: What do the eGPU port acronyms like 32Gbps-TB3 mean and what are their ranked & measured peak H2D/write bandwidths?

So I was able to improve my performance significantly by leaving my MacBook on its default configuration (No turbo boost disabled, no MacsFansControl) Basically everything stock/automatic...

That way I am getting way less throttles... but...

It still throttles some times I think. Not that much but I am trying to find a solution. (I've tried ThrottleStop, QuickCPU, Full Blast on the fans) and have failed....

What has worked for me the best is as I said. Leaving everything automatic and let the machine do it's thing...

I am currently looking for a way to get the best possible performance and I am considering drilling holes on the bottom case... I have heard some success stories of 10-20 Celsius difference...

Anyone have any tips in how to get the best CPU performance on BootCamp?

@ricardo_felix, I think the first thing you should try is repasting. I would suggest one of the noctuas as they hold up better under higher temperatures. I have kryonaut in my laptop which apparently isn't great for longevity in laptops because they get jostled. I'll be switching mine to noctua some time soon.

@lwf, Thanks for the advice. Which Noctua especifically woudl you recommend? I heard my model of MacBook comes with a high quality thermal paste already. (I think the 2018 models and before that did not have the best)

Would I notice any differences? I have never thermal pasted my laptop... curious in the results.

@ricardo_felix,

I have ordered the HT2 which is more expensive but does come with wipes. You will want to do some research on pasting techniques, a little goes a long way on a laptop. You could repaste your GPU as well - though eGPUs don't tend to get very hot in my experience.

As for your idea of making some holes in the case, I'm sure that would help especially if you can get come cool air into the chassis. Most non-apple laptops have a lot more ventilation so I'm confident you will not harm anything, it just won't look as pretty.

@ricardo_felix, on my 2020 mbp 13 I use custom performance mode and macs fans with custom 55c 93c and it never throttles with sim racing games.Note that  I had mine repasted  at an apple store a couple of months after I got it

However if I was going to try this mod I ll buy a hard case the one that snaps on and drill holes to that and the remove the metallic cover while using the case only to see if it helps.

@tsakal, yes I need to get mine pasted hopefully that'll help.

I am ordering a spare bottom cover from eBay and leaving my original one intact. I figured that is the way to go...

Hopefully I am happy with the results.
